League of Minnesota Cities Partners with RCP to Address Opioid Epidemic
Cities in Minnesota want to know how best to respond to the opioid epidemic that is impacting communities across the state. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, 422 people in Minnesota died from an opioid overdose in 2017 and 2,037 experienced a non-fatal overdose.

Project Spotlight: Measuring Costs of Services for Rural Land Uses in Scott County
Scott County, located southwest of the Twin Cities, has been among the fastest-growing counties in Minnesota for the last several decades. The population increased 55% between 1990 and 2000, growing to an estimated 143,680 residents in 2016. One of the key challenges the County faces as it continues to grow is understanding the fiscal impacts associated with different types of land use, particularly in rural and suburban areas of the county that are experiencing rapid growth for the first time.

RCP–Carver County Retrospective
During the 2015–2016 academic year, RCP and the University of Minnesota partnered with Carver County on 29 projects that included collaboration with four divisions at the County (Administrative Services, Planning and Water Management, Public Health, and Social Services) and three cities in Carver (Victoria, Watertown, and Chaska), as well as the county’s community development agency, transit authority, historical society, and school district.

This workshop series is designed to help you build a toolbox of skills for engaging in community-based research and practice. You can attend one workshop, or complete the entire series. University of Minnesota students, staff, and faculty, as well as community members, are welcome to attend. The workshops are free, and light refreshments will be provided.

Fall Semester independent study opportunities with RCP
Call for Graduate Student Researchers
The Resilient Communities Project has two opportunities for graduate students interested in enrolling in an independent study to work on a research project with local city staff during the fall 2019 semester.
We are looking for graduate students who are interested in local government policy, issues of community resilience and sustainability, and building research skills to work on projects proposed by our partners, the city of St. Anthony Village and the city of Ramsey.

Our advisory committee is growing! This fall, we welcome two new student members from the Department of Political Science: Victoria Nikonov and Ava Thompson. They join a dedicated group of 18 RCP Advisory Committee members that includes faculty, students, and staff from the U of MN, as well as city and county representatives from our past RCP partnerships. RCP Attends League of Minnesota Cities Conference
We had a great time exhibiting at the League of Minnesota Cities conference in Duluth, MN earlier this summer. The conference was an excellent opportunity for us to reach a new audience and share information about our Small-Scale RCP Partnership opportunity with mayors, city council members, and city managers from across Minnesota.

The Carver County Historical Society took another step towards restoration of the Andrew Peterson Farm in Laketown Township, as the county board approved a conditional use permit for the development and use of the property.
